A commented list of Scaphopoda (Mollusca) found along the Brazilian coast, with two new synonymies in the genus Gadila Gray, 1847 Biota Neotropica
Souza,Leonardo Santos de; Araújo,Isabella Campos Vieira; Caetano,Carlos Henrique Soares.
This review aims to present an updated checklist of scaphopods, based mainly on literature database. There is a total of 40 species (six families) for Brazil, including information about the distribution and bathymetric range of each taxon. We propose two synonyms with the aid of morphometry of the shell, for the genus Gadila: G. longa as junior synonym of G. elongata and G. robusta as junior synonym of G. pandionis.

A Measurement Quality Factor for Swath Bathymetry Sounders ArchiMer
Lurton, Xavier; Augustin, Jean-marie.
The quality estimation associated with individual soundings measured and computed by swath bathymetry sonars is a paramount issue which is most often imperfectly addressed today by sonar manufacturers. In this paper, a unified definition is proposed for a quality factor usable for all swath bathymetry sonars; the depth-relative error is directly estimated from the signal characteristics used in the sounding computation. The basic algorithms are presented for both phase-difference (oblique incidence) and amplitude (normal incidence) detection, and can be readily implemented in any swath bathymetry system using these detection principles. This approach gives a direct access to the objective bathymetric performance of individual soundings, and hence avoids...

A new morphometric study of Carioca Lake, Parque Estadual do Rio Doce (PERD), Minas Gerais State, Brazil - DOI: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v32i1.4990 Biological Sciences
Bezerra-Neto, José Fernandes; UFMG; Briguenti, Ludmila Silva; UFMG; Pinto-Coelho, Ricardo Motta; UFMG.
Carioca Lake is located within the limits of the Rio Doce State Park, in the eastern part of the state of Minas Gerais. This park, one of the largest natural reserves of the Atlantic Rain Forest in Brazil, is a hotspot of tropical biodiversity. The purpose of this study was to update existing information on the bathymetry and morphometric features of the lake, using differential GPS (DGPS) technology for data collection, coupled to a digital echo sounder. The bathymetry was based on the acquisition of 1106 points, where the depths as well as the geographic coordinates were obtained. The new study allowed the refinement of existing primary and secondary morphometric data for this lake.

Active faulting and deep crustal structure of the Eastern Sicily Margin ArchiMer
Dellong, David.
In the Ionian Sea (central Mediterranean) the slow convergence between Africa and Eurasia results in the formation of a narrow subduction zone. The nature of the crust of the subducting plate remains debated and could represent the last remnants of the Neo-Tethys ocean. The origin of the Ionian basin is also under discussion, especially concerning the rifting mechanisms as the Malta Escarpment could represent a remnant of this opening. This subduction retreats toward the south-east (motion occurring since the last 35 Ma) but is confined to the narrow Ionian basin. A major lateral slab tear fault is required to accommodate the slab rollback. This fault is thought to propagate along the eastern Sicily margin but its precise location remains controversial.This...

Active tectonics of the Calabrian subduction revealed by new multi-beam bathymetric data and high-resolution seismic profiles in the Ionian Sea (Central Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Gutscher, Marc-andre; Kopp, Heidrun; Krastel, Sebastian; Bohrmann, Gerhard; Garlan, Thierry; Zaragosi, Sebastien; Klaucke, Ingo; Wintersteller, Paul; Loubrieu, Benoit; Le Faou, Yann; San Pedro, Laurine; Dominguez, Stephane; Rovere, Marzia; De Lepinay, Bernard Mercier; Ranero, Cesar; Sallares, Valenti.
The detailed morphology and internal structure of the Calabrian accretionary wedge and adjacent Eastern Sicily margin are imaged in unprecedented detail by a combined dataset of multi-beam bathymetry and high-resolution seismic profiles. The bathymetric data represent the results of 6 recent marine geophysical surveys since 2010 as well as a compilation of earlier surveys presented as a 2 arc-sec (60 m) grid. Several distinct morpho-tectonic provinces are identified including: the deeply incised Malta–Hyblean Escarpment, numerous submarine canyons, broad regions of relatively flat seafloor dominated by fields of sediment waves, the gently undulating anticlinal fold-and-thrust belts of the external Calabrian accretionary wedge and the adjacent portion of...

An example of GIS potentiality for coastal zone management: preselection of submerged oyster culture areas near Marennes-Oleron (France) ArchiMer
Durand, H.; Guillaumont, Brigitte; Loarer, Ronan; Loubersac, Lionel; Heral, Maurice; Prou, Jean.
The Charente Maritime coast, in central western France, is the most important area for oyster and mussel production in Europe. High density, in this restricted intertidal area, induces low growing rate and socio-economic difficulties. One of the possible solutions is to shift some oysters from intertidal area to submerged areas. Bathymetry, sedimentology, hydrodynamism, fisheries and administrative rules are some conditions which are considered to establish the better selection of potential zone. The successive steps of setting up the prototype of GIS are presented: digitized traditional data from charts, extracted data from grid models (hydrodynmaic model), merging of thematic covers, proposal of favorable areas. The results are discussed especially on...

Augris, Claude; Hamon, Dominique.
This atlas presents in a synthetic form the hydrodynamical, geological and biological characteristics of one of the most studied region of the French littoral. Geologic and geophysical data of the Saint-Brieuc Bay show that the deep basement consists of pre-palaeozoic or palaeozoic sedimentary series in the centre of the Bay, whereas metamorphic and magmatic formations are dominant in coastal regions. The location of superficial sediments in the Bay, is mainly due to marine currents. A granulometric gradient, from very fine to coarse sediments, appears in two directions: from the coast towards the high sea, and from the west to the east. Rocky substrates disrupt the sediment distribution, with, most of the time, a concentration of coarse sediments near the...

bathymetric chart of alexandria wastern harbor OceanDocs
El-Geziry, T.M.; Abd Ellah, R.G.; Maiyza, I.A..
Alexandria Eastern Harbor is a shallow, protected, semi-enclosed, circular basin. It is connected to the Mediterranean Sea through two openings: El-Boughaz (main) and El-Silsila. New data, from a recent bathymetric survey in the Harbor, is used to build up its bathymetric chart. The bottom of the Harbor slopes gradually seawards, with an average depth of 5m inside the Harbor. The study build up Alexandria Eastern Harbor new bathymetric chart, will be a useful tool to follow-up the problems of the harbor and to propose suitable solutions. Recommendations are set in the end of the study to activate the self recovery (by the Harbor water body) to preserve and recover the situation of Alexandria Eastern Harbor.

Bathymetric estimation using MERIS images in coastal sea waters ArchiMer
Minghelli Roman, Audrey; Polidori, Laurent; Mathieu-blanc, Sandrine; Loubersac, Lionel; Cauneau, François.
Bathymetric estimation using remote sensing images has previously been applied to high spatial resolution imagery such as CASI, Ikonos, or SPOT but not on medium spatial resolution images (i.e., MERIS). This choice can be justified when there is a need to map the bathymetry on large areas. In this letter, we present the results of the bathymetry estimation over a large known area, the Gulf of Lion (France), expanding over 270 x 180 km.

Petit, Tillys.
The Reykjanes Ridge is a major topographic feature of the North-Atlantic Ocean that extends from Iceland to the Charlie Gibbs Fracture Zone. Located between the Iceland Basin and the Irminger Sea, the Reykjanes Ridge strongly influences the subpolar gyre circulation and is a gate toward the deep convection areas. However, the circulation and distribution across the Reykjanes Ridge has never been directly quantified such that the characterization of the connection between the Iceland Basin and the Irminger Sea is still incomplete. As part of the Reykjanes Ridge Experiment project, we were able to analyze the circulation around, above and across the Reykjanes Ridge. Mainly based on hydrographic sections along and perpendicular to the ridge axis, the aim of...

Petit, Tristan.
Airborne hyperspectral imaging is a potential candidate for mapping and monitoring coral reefs at large scale and with high spatial resolution. In this thesis, we first present the processing steps to be applied to hyperspectral signals for extracting information about seabed types, bathymetry and water optical properties, and we discuss their efficiency with respect to two main confounding factors: (i) low signal to noise ratio of the measured signals, and (ii) large number and variability of physical interactions occurring between the entrance of sunlight into the atmosphere and its measurement by the hyperspectral sensor. Considering these limitations, we examine the performance of an already existing water column processing method: semi-analytical...

Renard, V.
The side looking sonars have been developed for greater swath coverage, digital processing of the signals has improved the quality of the images and interferometric techniques have been used to determine the depth of the bottom features. A review of the systems existing today is presented. Documents such as graphs, block diagrams, images, maps, sections, created from data acquired at sea level suffer from a filtering or smoothing effect that restricts the representativity of the measured parameters and therefore limits their interpretation. The greater the depth of the seafloor, the greater the filtering. It is due not only to the nature of the measured phenomenon but also the characteristics of the sensors, to their operation and to the data processing....

Legeais, Jean-francois.
The "World Ocean Circulation experiment" (WOCE) program in the 1990s has produced the equivalent of 300 years of subsurface floats trajectories within the Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW) at 800dbar in the South Atlantic ocean, and several hydrological transects. In order to compute the western boundary circulation, the flow is vertically extrapolated by referencing geostrophic hydrological profiles to float speeds. Several transects normal to the continental slope and another one parallel to it off the coast give transports of the water masses with a good transversal and longitudinal resolutions. Floats at 800dbar sampled the Intermediate Western Boundary Current (IWBC) particularly well, and enable one to analyse it from 28°S at the bifurcation of the...

Koffi, Koffi Ph.; Affian, Kouadio; Abé, Jacques.

Controls on turbidite sedimentation: Insights from a quantitative approach of submarine channel and lobe architecture (Late Quaternary Congo fan) ArchiMer
Picot, M.; Droz, L.; Marsset, Tania; Dennielou, Bernard; Bez, M..
The role of internal and external forcing of sedimentation in turbidite systems remains a subject of debate. Here we propose new insights from the quantitative analysis of architectural parameters of the Congo Axial Fan. Fifty-two channel-levee-lobe systems, spanning the last ca. 200 ka, are visible on the seafloor, most of them having slightly elongated lobe complexes at their termination. Volumes of lobe complexes (usually 3 to 196 km3) are highly variable in time and space. The cumulative volume of the lobe complexes represents approximately 30% of the volume of the Axial Fan. The Axial Fan is sequentially divided into periods of increasing/decreasing channel lengths and basinward/landward migrations of avulsion points, representing successive...

De Casamajor, Marie-noelle; Derrien-courtel, Sandrine; Lalanne, Yann; Maria Gorostiaga, José; Le Gal, Aodren; Huguenin, Laura; Quintano, Endika; Lissardy, Muriel.
Cystoseira baccata, a biological quality element for the implementation of the Water Framework and Marine Strategy EU Directives, is a dominant species in the subtidal rocky bottoms of the Basque coast. As part of this issue and given the need to better understand the functional character of benthic rocky ecosystems and use them as a reference to anthropogenic changes, two samplings campaigns were conducted in 2014 and 2017. Several population parameters (i.e. frond density, frond length frond-length/total frond-length ratio and taxonomic richness of epibionts) of C. baccata were studied from three sites monitored within the Water Directive Framework in relation to bathymetry during the two campaigns. The results showed a significant influence of...

In 2013, the project ‘Assessment of the renewable rate of the seawater masses in the Miquelon ‘Grand Etang’ ‘ focused essentially on (1) building a data set originating from all partners (e.g., DTAM, IGN), (2) preliminary sampling of current patterns so as to facilitate the 2014 field sampling strategy. Besides this approach, a census of aerial pictures dated from 1950, 1990 and 2005 were studied to assess the temporal trends of this geographic sector. The field work to be carried out in 2014 are: 1) Bathymetry: data acquisition in the ‘Grand Etang’ in the area presently used for mussel long lines culture to obtain a comprehensive data set, transversal profiles at the strait level at the near vicinity of the current pattern measuring station. 2) Current...
